Bollard Barriers

Q: What is a bollard barrier?

A: A bollard barrier is a post, typically made of steel, used for anti-vehicle barrier protection. Common configurations include surface mounted (fixed), anchored in the ground with cement, or moveable with the assistance of hydraulics, electric motors or deployed manually by hand. Bollard barriers help regulate pedestrian and vehicle movement and are often used in front of retail stores, military installations, courthouses and other high-traffic and high-security locations. These barriers are often used to minimize building or equipment damage. They also help reduce theft by vehicle ram-raids, accidental driver errors, employee & customer Injuries, and insurance claims.

Bollard barriers are an example of some of the first anti-ram vehicle barriers used in the United States. K12 Defense Consultants, located in Mesa Arizona, manufactures a unique bollard barrier configuration that is manually deployable and acts as a rapidly deployable anti-ram vehicle barrier. Each bollard weighs over 350 lbs and can be moved into the up or down position in seconds without the assistance of forklifts or machinery. This flush, in-ground, rebar reinforced barrier system, is hot dipped galvanized. MinuteMan is also 100% manually deployable – and creates no tripping hazards, no holes to cover, no power or controls required. Includes pre-fabricated and threaded rebar kit for use at time of installation.

Anti-Ram or Anti-Vehicle Barriers

Q: What is an Anti-Ram or Anti-Vehicle Barrier?

A: An Anti-ram or Anti-Vehicle barrier is a specialized security framework. These barriers are designed to stop potential vehicle attacks on buildings, pedestrians and entrances to government and military installations. These specialized barriers can be fixed or mobile and include a variety of configurations. Common products include bollards, wedge barriers, drop arms, beam, gate and mobile rolling barriers. Barriers are strategically placed to prevent unauthorized vehicles from entering protected areas or breaching crowds of civilians. K12 Defense is a major manufacturer of unique barrier solutions that are ideal for areas of high concern. The “Minuteman” manually deployable bollard system and “The Enforcer” Mobile rolling anti-ram vehicle barrier have proven effective at stopping gate runners and other mobile threats on pedestrians and high security facilities.

The Department of Homeland Security defines an Anti-Ram or Anti-Vehicle Barrier as providing a sufficient level of protection and mitigation from vehicle-borne threat to a secured area.  Applications in which these barriers are normally used include airports, borders, U.S. government facilities, ports, public venues, and law enforcement facilities.

Final Denial Barrier

Q: What is a final denial barrier?

A: Final denial barriers are physical barriers placed at the last point in a physical security plan where it’s possible to stop a gate runner or other facility breach. Final denial barriers might include tire shredders, bollards, wedge barriers, drop arms or beams that are crash rated and designed to stop even very large vehicles. High-security facilities and installations (like military bases and courthouses) cannot allow facility breaches and therefore require final denial barriers.  With the ever increasing risk of terrorist attacks, it is imperative these “high-security” locations install a final denial system that will work each and every time. Final denial barriers are an essential component of any perimeter security plan. Images below show examples of Final Denial Barriers.

Serpentine Barriers

Q: What is a serpentine barrier?

A: Serpentine barriers force drivers to slow down as they approach the entrance and/or exit to give security personnel more time to respond to threats. Serpentine barriers usually consist of bollards or mobile barriers arranged in varying configurations like a maze. K12 Defense manufactures two unique barriers that are ideal for serpentine configurations; The “Minuteman” manually deployable bollard system and “The Enforcer” Mobile rolling anti-ram vehicle barrier.
