Removable Bollard Barriers
A: A removable bollard barrier is a post, typically made of steel, that can be removed for traffic ingress and egress. Crash rated removable bollard barriers are very heavy and typically require a forklift for removal. More convenient removable bollard configurations are available that retract into the ground. These barriers thus avoid the need for electricity, hydraulics or machinery. The MinuteMan manually retractable bollard barrier system is a patented retractable barrier that requires no electricity or machinery for deployment. Available in a variety of configurations, MinuteMan Bollards are deployable in seconds with the push of a finger.

What is a Fixed Bollard Barrier?
Q: What is a fixed bollard barrier?
A: Bollards that don’t need to be removed are called fixed bollard barriers. These bollard barriers are surface mounted to the roadway. More substantial fixed bollard barriers are cemented into the ground, often with a rebar cage, providing additional strength in the event of a vehicle ramming incident or motorist accident. Many retailers across the country such as Walmart and Home Depot use fixed bollard barriers in parking lots, building entrances and other high traffic areas, to protect customers and maintain security at building entrances and loading docks. Fixed bollard barriers are typically made of steel and carry varying levels of crash ratings, with some being used solely for architectural look or roadway deterrents.

K12 Defense manufactures a bollard system array that is fixed in the ground and can be moved into the up or down position in under a minute. The Minuteman 2-bollard array is a unique, patented, vehicular barrier system that is precisely counterbalanced and fully deployable in less than a minute with the push of a finger. Tire Spike Barrier
Q: What is a vehicle spike or tire spike barrier?
A: A vehicle tire spike barrier uses teeth to deter gate runners and unauthorized traffic from entering or exiting a facility. Often called tire shredders or tiger teeth barriers, these vehicle spike barriers can be either surface mounted (which avoids trenching and disturbing utilities), or flush mount (below ground) which creates a smoother driving surface for better traffic flow. Manual, one-way spike systems utilize a spring loaded surface mechanism to deter vehicles from driving the wrong way or entering unauthorized areas. More sophisticated systems are mounted in the ground and require electric or hydraulic activation. Customers seeking a robust tire spike barrier can contact K12 Defense for pricing and availability. K12 Defense is also certified to repair and install a wide range of configurations and models from many manufacturers.

Tire Spike Barriers are popular at rental car facilities, airports, parking garages and other locations where limiting vehicular access to parking lots and parking structures is critical. Contact K12 Defense for spike repair, maintenance or install.
After a vehicle’s tires have passed over the barrier, the teeth automatically raise back up to their default position. This prevents drivers from backing up or unauthorized vehicles from entering protected areas. Tire shredders or “tire spike barriers” are some of the most effective deterrents against unlawful entry into areas of high concern.

Drop Arm Barriers
Q: What are drop arm barriers?
A: Drop arm barriers are for above ground protection with an arm that lifts from horizontal to vertical. Drop arm barriers also provide a solution where there is a limited amount of space on either side of the roadway. In some configurations, arm barriers can swing horizontally to open and close off roadways. Drop arm or swing barriers can also be purchased in a variety of lengths, helping to avoid digging into the roadway and disturbing underground utilities. K12 Defense manufactures and has been installing drop-arm barriers across the globe for military, government and private industry to protect roadways and increase perimeter security.
Those desiring to move away from a hydraulic barriers configuration can have their barrier(s) converted to electric with a K12 Defense electro-mechanical retrofit, which will leave the barrier crash rating intact and remove the mess and hassle of dealing with hydraulic leaks and breaks. What is a Crash Beam Barrier?
Q: What is a crash beam barrier?
A: Crash Beam Barriers use vertical or horizontal actuation to move a beam into place for stopping traffic and gate runners at government facilities, military bases, airports, public and private entities and many automotive sales facilities such as Hertz Rental Car and Carmax. Most beams move up and down, but alternative options move horizontal such as a gate or fence. Beam barriers in many instances are very similar to drop arm barriers. Beam barriers are most often used for controlling traffic and protecting vulnerable roadways. Crash rated beam barriers are available in hydraulic, electric, and manually operated configurations depending on the volume of traffic encountered. Crash rated beam barriers carry ratings from M30 to M50 (K4 to K12) with penetration levels up to 3 feet or less.
Multiple configurations include vertical and horizontal actuation with lengths from 10’ to 30’ are very common among a wide variety of models and manufacturers. Adjustable speed options are also utilized with the ability to provide an Emergency Fast Operation (EFO) of less than 2 seconds if required. K12 Defense Solutions provide standard and customized solutions for customers requiring crash beam barrier protection. K12 Defense can also convert existing hydraulic beam barriers over to electric with an electro-mechanical retrofit.

What is a Wedge Barrier?
Q: What is a Wedge Barrier?
A: A wedge barrier is a type of active vehicle barrier that sits in a flush position with the surface of the ground. Most wedge barriers are surface mounted or buried in the roadway. Recently, some manufacturers have developed a mobile wedge barrier that can be towed to specific locations for rapid deployment. When the wedge is in the up position, wedge barriers lock in position forming a wedge shape to block oncoming traffic. Wedge barriers are very effective for stopping gate runners and locking down entry/exit points against terrorist attacks. K12 Defense Consultants has developed an electro-mechanical retrofit that replaces all hydraulics in existing barriers that are prone to leaks and breaks. Many military installations and government buildings are moving away from hydraulic barriers and upgrading their barriers to electric. No more hydraulic line breaks, spills or mess from oil spills.
TIRED OF BROKEN HYDRAULIC LINES?
You’re not alone! Hydraulic systems are prone to leaks, breaks, ruptures and are costly to maintain and repair. But you don’t have to remain stuck with your hydraulic headache. Ditch the oil and upgrade your barrier system to electric. The K12 Defense spring assisted SAUs incorporate brushless servo motor technology and have built-in absolute encoders along with mechanical fail safe brakes. The servo drives that operate the SAUs can control acceleration and deceleration while moving the barrier plate, arm or bollard very accurately from the down position to the up position and back again, resulting in very smooth, controlled movements. The fail safe mechanical brakes hold the barrier in position when it is not moving, even when electrical power is off.
